Dr. Less was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio. He graduated from *The Ohio State University College of Dentistry* in 1974, and is a veteran of the *Air Force Dental Corps*. Starting in 1978, Dr. Less spent the next 20 years in his Ohio general dental practice dedicated to pain management and full mouth reconstruction. In 1997 Dr. Less returned to school at the *University of Southern California Dental School* where he obtained a Certificate of Endodontics from the school’s Endodontic Residency Program. He opened his practice in Turlock on October 1, 1999. Dr. Less is passionate about endodontics, and with his background as a general dentist, he brings a unique perspective to the practice of this area of dentistry. Dr. Less is a member of the *American Dental Association*, the *California Dental Association*, and the *American Association of Endodontists*.   There are numerous interests in Dr. Less’ life, but family, following Ohio State football, travel, working out, and reading occupy most of his spare time. Lisa has been Dr. Less’s lead assitant since 1999 and an endodontic RDA since 1996. She is very detail-oriented and now is Turlock Endo's Office Manager. She enjoys spending time with her family and scrapbooking. Lisa is bilingual in Portuguese. Halie, an avid poultry enthusiast, dedicates her time to the meticulous care and nurturing of her flock of chickens, ensuring their well-being and optimal growth. Alongside her passion for poultry, she immerses herself in rigorous gym sessions, with dedication and perseverance. Despite her bustling schedule, Halie prioritizes quality time with her cherished family, fostering bonds and creating lasting memories through shared experiences and heartfelt moments. Information is key - at **Turlock Endodontics** we commit to delivering all the information you as our patient need to move forward with a treatment, be sure we will always answer all questions you might have. **Our goal is to provide the best care for you and your smile.** Continue all medications for **blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid problems and any other conditions as recommended by your physician.** If you have a question, please call our office prior to your appointment.  Pre-medicate if you have been advised by your physician or dentist to use antibiotic premedication because of mitral valve prolapse (MVP), heart murmur, hip, knee, cardiac, or other prosthesis, or if you have rheumatic heart disease. Eat regular meals before your appointment. If you are given a referral card by your general dentist, please bring them to your appointment. Our office staff will make every effort to inform you of the charges due, prior to your appointment. We ask that you come prepared. If you have questions regarding payment options, please call us today. All patients under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian. It is normal to feel tenderness in the area over the next few days as your body undergoes the natural healing process. You may also feel some jaw tenderness from keeping it open for an extended period of time. These symptoms are temporary and usually respond very well to over-the-counter pain medications. It is important for you to follow the instructions on how to take these medications. Remember that narcotic medications, if prescribed, may make you drowsy, and caution should be exercised in operating dangerous machinery or driving a car while taking them. Your tooth may continue to feel slightly different from your other teeth for some time after your root canal treatment has been completed. Healing time varies with each individual. However, if you have severe pain or pressure that last more than a few days, please call our office.  You have had a dental surgery that can cause some discomfort, swelling and bruising. To help minimize the swelling, you may alternate ice on the affected area for 20 minutes on and then 20 minutes off, repeating for 3 to 4 hours. You may also take an anti-inflammatory or Tylenol to control the pain. Some bleeding is normal. Notify us immediately if you experience excessive bleeding—no smoking after treatment. The day after surgery, you may start using warm salt water rinses after every meal; this will assist the healing. Please call our office anytime should you have a concern. We will re-evaluate the surgery site when your sutures are removed, in approximately one week. Most treatments within our office progress as anticipated. Occasionally we will begin treatment with the best of intentions and discover a tooth just can’t be maintained. There are many causes, but some of the more prevalent include a significant crack or fracture, inability to find canals, or not enough tooth structure to repair it. Because we complete a thorough exam, we usually will inform you of these possibilities prior to beginning treatment. Once in awhile, a tooth that seemed to be maintainable will catch us off guard without much warning. Whatever the cause, overhead within the office does NOT allow us to do these exploratory cases at no charge.  Usually, the charge is a minimal 350 dollars or less. Want to know more? Just ask  Once you schedule an appointment with our office, you will be given your own unique User ID and Password to access our online patient services.The following services are available: Give us a call for any questions you might have regarding our services or how we can help you, we will gladly answer all questions and guide you during the process. We ask that you provide us with all of your insurance information at the time you schedule your appointment. We will then contact your insurance carrier to find out your specific plan’s insurance benefits, and let you know your estimated portion prior to your appointment. Be advised **insurance companies routinely indicate that coverage verification does not guarantee payment**.  While we try our best to estimate your out-of-pocket expense, actual payment is determined by the insurance company once they process the claim. The contract *your employer* negotiated with *your insurance* carrier defines *your dental benefits*. As you read the benefit or insurance plan booklet provided by your employer, you will better understand your benefits. Various dental plans cover endodontic procedures at different payment levels and, as a result, your payment portion may vary. **At the time of service, you will be responsible for the estimated portion that your insurance will not cover**.  Please remember that you are fully responsible for all fees charged by this office *regardless* of your insurance coverage. We will wait 90 days for the insurance company to pay their portion. In the event your insurance company fails to pay, rejects the claim, or does not pay the total balance, ***you are responsible*** for the remaining balance. If your insurance pays more than the estimated amount, a refund check from this office will be mailed within 1 month from the date payment is received in our office.   If your insurance pays less than the estimated amount, you will receive a statement from this office.  Your prompt remittance is greatly appreciated. **Delta Health Systems-this includes employees of Foster Farms** While we may not be in contract with your particular dental plan, it does not mean your insurance company completely excludes our office. Many insurance companies pay out of network dentists equal to their in network dentists. Again, our staff will research your insurance and give you the best out of pocket estimate prior to your visit. The workings of dental insurance can be confusing. Signs to look for include pain, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, tenderness to touch and chewing, discoloration of the tooth, and swelling, drainage and tenderness in the lymph nodes as well as nearby bone and gingival tissues. Sometimes, however, there are no symptoms. Many endodontic procedures are performed to relieve the pain of toothaches caused by the pulp inflammation or infection. With modern techniques and anesthetics, most patients report that they are comfortable during the procedure. For most patients, the feeling of numbness usually subsides after 2-3 hours. For those patients who are especially anxious about dental procedures, we provide a prescription for orally administered Valium. For the first few days after treatment, your tooth may feel sensitive, especially if there was a pain or infection before the procedure. This discomfort can be relieved with over-the-counter or prescription medications. Follow your endodontist’s instructions carefully. Your tooth may continue to feel slightly different from your other teeth for some time after your endodontic treatment is complete. However, if you have severe pain or pressure that lasts more than a few days, call your endodontist. Yes, for most root canal treatments, especially if there is a large lesion in the bone, we recommend that patients return to the office 6-12 months after the procedure was finished. This allows us to make sure the tooth has healed or is healing properly. Our office will notify you when it is time for you to return for an evaluation of healing. Since an abscess may take 2 years to heal, our office will reevaluate the tooth for at least 2 years. Occasionally a tooth that has undergone endodontic, treatment fails to heal or pain continues despite therapy. Although rare, sometimes a tooth initially responds to root canal therapy but becomes painful or diseased months or years later. When either of these situations occur, the tooth often can be maintained with a second endodontic treatment. The treatment consists of three or four basic steps, but the number of visits will depend on your particular case. Some treatments take 2 visits but most are just a single visit. Occasionally 3 appointments are needed. You should allow 2 to 2.5 hours for endodontic treatment of a molar. In any case, it depends on the degree of infection/inflammation and degree of treatment difficulty. To me, it’s more important to do it the very best we can than to meet a specific time criteria. You should not chew or bite on hard food items on the treated tooth until you have had it restored by your dentist; a good rule of thumb is if it is harder than a carrot stick, don't chew the food item on that tooth. The unrestored tooth is susceptible to fracture and possible leakage around temporary fillings, so you should see your dentist for a full restoration as soon as possible. Otherwise, you need only practice good oral hygiene, including brushing, flossing and regular check-ups and cleanings. Most endodontically treated teeth last as long as other natural teeth. In a few cases, a tooth that has undergone endodontic treatment does not heal or the pain continues. Occasionally, the tooth may become painful or diseases months or even years after successful treatment. Often, when this occurs, redoing the endodontic procedure can save the tooth. Occasionally a tooth that has undergone endodontic, treatment fails to heal or pain continues despite therapy. Although rare, sometimes a tooth initially responds to root canal therapy but becomes painful or diseased months or years later. New trauma, deep decay or a or a leaking crown can cause new infection in your tooth. In some cases, the endodontist may discover additional very narrow or curved canals that were not be treated during the initial procedure. These situations can usually be successfully treated with a second endodontic procedure. Most teeth can be treated. Occasionally, a tooth can’t be saved because the root canals are not accessible, the root is severely fractured, the tooth doesn’t have adequate bone support or the tooth cannot be restored. However, advances in endodontics are making it possible to save teeth that even a few years ago would have been lost. When conventional endodontic treatment is not effective, endodontic surgery may be able to save the tooth. The cost varies depending on how complex the problem is and which tooth is affected. Molars are more difficult to treat, the fee is usually more. Most dental insurance policies provide some coverage for endodontic treatment. Generally, endodontic treatment and restoration of the natural tooth are less than the alternative of having the tooth extracted. An extracted tooth must be replaced with a bridge or implant to restore chewing function and prevent adjacent teeth from shifting. These procedures tend to cost more than endodontic treatment and appropriate restoration. With root canal treatment you save your natural teeth and money. No. While X-rays will be necessary during your endodontic treatment, we use an advanced non-film computerized system, called digital radiography that produces radiation levels up to 70 percent lower than those of already low dose conventional dental x-ray machinery. These digital images can be optimized, archived, printed and sent to other treating dentists via email or diskette. Again, there’s no need for concern. We adhere to the most rigorous standards of infection control advocated by OSHA, the Centers for Disease Control, and the American Dental Association. We are meticulous in our use of barrier techniques, disinfection, and autoclave sterilization to eliminate any risk of infection. **Operating Microscopes**: In addition to digital radiography, we utilize special operating microscopes. Magnification and fiber optic illumination are helpful in aiding the doctor to see tiny details inside your tooth. **Apex Locators**: These devices measure the length of the tooth electronically and reduce the need for radiographs during treatment. **Ultrasonics**: Ultrasonic energy can be used to “drill” away tiny portions of a tooth to locate small canals or remove obstructions in the tooth. We also use ultrasonic devices to aid in endodontic microsurgery. **Sonic Activators**: This device removes the “smear layer” from the inside walls of the root canal. This enables the dentist to remove bacterial substrate and ensure a better seal of the root canal.
